Acupuncture for Stress Relief
Stress is and always has been, a normal and inevitable part of life. However modern day life is, for many people, becoming increasingly stressful. Our lives are often extremely busy with working, looking after children or other family members, as well as managing day-to-day life admin! But something I believe that causes us considerable further stress (whether or not we are aware of it) is the rate at which we now receive information. With our smart phones, iPads or laptops never far away from our gaze, we find ourselves receiving endless streams of information (much of it fear-based). At the same time, we are often less connected to Nature than ever before and these factors contribute to higher levels of stress and anxiety as they take their toll on our Central Nervous System.
While short-lived periods of stress, at manageable levels, should not negatively impact a person’s health too much, excessive and/or prolonged stress has a tendency to impede the delicate balance in our body and trigger the start of health problems. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, stress is known to affect the free flow of Qi within the body, resulting in a plethora of imbalances including stagnation, excessive internal Heat and poor blood circulation.
The organ system most acutely affected by prolonged or severe stress is the Liver System. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the Liver System is known to be responsible for the smooth flow of energy (Qi) around the body and towards the other organs. It is also responsible for detoxifying the blood of excess toxins, hormones, etc.
The most common manifestations of stress include sleeping disorders, anxiety, low mood, headaches, fatigue, digestive issues, menstrual issues, hypertension, decrease in sexual ability, and a desire for sweets and sugar. In some cases, long-term stress can also lead to weight loss or weight gain problems.
Physiologically, acupuncture has a multitude of stress-busting effects on the body, including: calming the central nervous system, releasing endorphins, anti-inflammatory effects, increased blood circulation, and a calming effect on mind, body and spirit.
Most people find the experience of having acupuncture to be very relaxing, and after each treatment, stress levels are greatly reduced. Each session builds on previous sessions to alter the physiology of the body and bring about real change, be it improved sleep, improved sense of wellbeing, regulated hormones, reduction in feelings of stress and anxiety, etc.
