Acupuncture for Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)
PCOS is an ovulatory disorder which can affect the pancreas, hypothalamus, pituitary gland and adrenal glands. It can also cause acne, excess facial or body hair, thinning hair on the head and increased body weight. The most consistent indications of PCOS however, are irregular or absent periods (due to lack of ovulation), elevated androgenic hormones and ovaries with multiple small follicles with a pearl-like appearance.
Eggs develop and mature in a 100 day cycle (not 28 days as is commonly understood). This means that the hormonal environment they are developing in during those 100 days will greatly affect their quality, and therefore the chances of conception.
Women with PCOS often have very long cycles or they don’t ovulate at all. If an egg is released, it is often very late in the cycle and therefore of poorer quality due to the unhealthy hormonal surroundings in which it has been developing. Forcing a woman with PCOS to ovulate by using ovarian-stimulating drugs will often result in poor egg quality, with conception being unlikely.
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) seeks to gently redress the entire hormonal environment for women with PCOS, so that the ovaries can begin to function normally again, producing an oestrogen and progesterone-rich environment within which healthy eggs can develop and release at the optimal time.
Treatment with acupuncture, herbal therapy and dietary advice will show month on month improvement in a woman’s cycles as well as her BBT (Basal Body Temperature) charts until conception occurs.
